NCTAS-P Accredited Explosive Detection Dog Teams

NCTAS-P stands for the National Canine Training and Accreditation Scheme – Private Security Industry. It is a UK Government-backed accreditation programme for private-sector Explosive Detection Dog (EDD) teams.

Developed through collaboration among the Home Office, Counter Terrorism Policing, and the National Protective Security Authority (NPSA), NCTAS-P was introduced to provide a recognised and consistent standard for explosives detection dog teams operating in the private security sector.

Prior to the introduction of NCTAS-P, there was no government-recognised accreditation scheme for private sector explosive detection dog teams. The programme was created to ensure that private providers could demonstrate the same high levels of competence, professionalism and operational capability expected within government and policing environments.

What Does NCTAS-P Accreditation Mean?

NCTAS-P accreditation is awarded to a specific dog and handler team, not simply to a company. To achieve and maintain accreditation, both the handler and dog must successfully complete rigorous assessments against nationally recognised standards.

The accreditation process evaluates a team's ability to:

  • Identify a range of threat-relevant explosive substances
  • Conduct safe and effective searches
  • Search vehicles, buildings, routes and open areas
  • Operate in realistic operational environments
  • Follow correct procedures when a potential threat is identified
  • Maintain ongoing training and competency standards

Accreditation is reviewed regularly to ensure teams continue to meet the required operational standards and remain capable of performing effectively in real-world deployments.

Why is NCTAS-P Important?

For organisations looking to procure explosive detection dog services, NCTAS-P provides reassurance that the team being deployed has been independently assessed against a government-backed standard.

The scheme was developed to improve consistency across the industry, ensuring that clients can have confidence in the quality, capability and professionalism of accredited teams. It also enables greater interoperability between private-sector providers and government agencies, helping ensure a consistent approach to explosives detection operations.

For venues, public spaces, events, and critical infrastructure sites, choosing an NCTAS-P-accredited team helps demonstrate a commitment to recognised security standards and best practice.
